Every four to eight years, when we get a new President, a unique opportunity presents itself for those who want to serve in political appointments for the new administration.
A publication known as The Plum Book lists all the available positions around the world, from ambassadors and secretaries to numerous other executive roles.
You can check out the 2016 edition at this link, and we expect President-Elect Biden’s administration to issue the new one, which should contain 7–9K open positions, in early 2021.
So, what can you do right now, besides familiarize yourself with the types of positions in the current Plum Book?
You can start to prepare your resume!
CareerPro Global’s industry-leading team has assisted more than 65K job seekers over the past 36 years in preparing Plum Book resumes, traditional federal resumes, Senior Executive Service (SES) application packages, and private sector/military transition resumes.
Here are a few tips and best practices to help you prepare your Plum Book resume:
– Unlike the much more detailed and comprehensive five-page federal/SES resume, stick to a clean two-to-three-page format.
– Normally a federal resume isn’t the place for political views, but this is the exception. In the professional summary at the top of the resume, make it clear where you stand, what you believe in, and how you would like to support the new administration.
– Present your work history and key accomplishments for the past 10–15 years, while also highlighting your political affiliation, campaign experience, or other related volunteer experience.
– Remember that these are high-level executive leadership roles, so tailor your resume toward the specific position you want, focusing on your relevant executive and technical expertise. For example, if you’re applying to be the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy within the Department of Energy, it’s important to mention your background in that specialized community.
– Finally, it is appropriate to submit a one-page cover letter with your resume, explaining candidly why you are interested in the position and how your unique background, skills, and potential can help achieve the organization’s mission.
